Long Live the Confederation!
Sad news to report today: actor Alan Mandell passed away on Tuesday at age 98. Mr. Mandell had long career which resulted in several notable film appearances including a celebrated role in the Coen brothers' A Serious Man. He was best known for his work on stage and in particular his numerous appearances in Samuel Beckett plays. Wing Commander fans, though, will remember him for playing the devious Kilrathi Emperor in Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger (1994). The Hollywood Reporter has a full obituary which details his storied acting career and fascinating life.

In Wing Commander III, Mandell's Emperor is the leader of the Kilrathi and the master of the game's primary antagonist, Prince Thrakhath. The Emperor appears in the game's introduction and then features in a number of load-bearing interstitial scenes that cut away, Tora! Tora! Tora!-style, to show the Kilrathi plotting the war. Mandell voices the Emperor expertly, leaving Thrakhath always unsure if he is a senile figurehead or a cunning master of royal court drama.
And his success or demise is part of the player's ultimate reward: win the game and he is crushed in his collapsing palace, lose it and he laughs boisterous at Earth's enslavement. Mandell was the third person to voice the Emperor, after developer Siobahn Beeman in the Wing Commander II demo and Texas Chainsaw Massacre actor Edwin Neal in the game.

The classic Making of Wing Commander III documentary includes a behind-the-scenes clip of Chris Roberts directing Alan Mandell as the Emperor opposite John Rhys-Davies as Prince Thrakhath and Alan Rickman as Melek. You can watch the entire documentary online here.

The Wing Commander Combat Information Center staff would like to express our condolences to his family, friends and many, many fans. "Never let it be forgotten..."

So great seeing him sitting next to John Rhys-Davies and uttering those lines that are so familiar to us all, I've never seen that clip before.

RIP and thank you. 98! What an innings!
