I was looking at the latest screenshots, and I noticed the resource costs for the arrow, banshee, and vindicator we all 100. With the resource prices equal, why would a player be motivated to say build arrows, over vindicators? The Vindicator if I remember correctly had Torps and could down a cap ship, while the arrow is a light fighter. So the vindicator as such is prob a more dangerous ship in a cap ship fight, and should cost more.

Hey, czacen, I call the very first Beta. Well, I'd like the first Beta. Send me a private message when you release it. Can I also get a percent complete? It would be very nice to estimate how long we have to wait.

Holy hell, Winnyfred - go take a cold shower or something. Read a book - anything! There's no need to pester the guy - he's posting regular updates of his progress, and he's shown us pretty much everything along the way. Just relax and enjoy the ride!

A big second to that one.

Take your time czacen. You have some eager fans, but that doesn't mean that we aren't patient =) Great things come to those who wait-- even if the person making it is making breakneak speed =)

Great screens, I've been following up on this for months. I am excited to say the least.

Please Winnyfield, keep cool, pressing czacen for working harder than he's already working won't help. Do lik me, follow the updates without speaking if you have nothing important to say.

czacen : Great job. I've been waiting for such a mod during the last 2 years, and I'm happy it's going to be released. I don't know when, but I don't care. And when I see the regular updates, I cannot dare to criticize your work. Take your time to finish the mod, it'll still be a lot shorter than "other" mods (Guess which one I'm talking about ^_^;.

Great work.

czacen: I just wanted to say that everything looks fantastic! After silently following along, I decided to finally speak up.

Thank you for the hard work. I know it will do nothing but impress upon its release!

I'm hoping I won't get yelled at for posting this one. It looks good, but it's only picture's. Got a demo? I'm joking picture's look great, gameplay looks awesome (can't say for sure.) I got my HW2 game loaded up and getting ready to command armies.

Taken any thought to my ejection idea? I know you said in a later patch, but I'd like to know if you've given deeper thought to it.

IMPORTANT: Don't take this the wrong way Lt.Death100, Chris, I'm not rushing him to get to a patch, just want to know if he took any deeper thoughts to an ejection seat.

Czacen: would I need the HW2 game just to play this mod.
Sorry if this questioned has been answered already, but I really don't have much knowledge as a modder does when it comes to these games (not as much as I thought i did anyway).

I would think you would need HW2. It's a great game even without this mod, but I am very excited to apply this mod as soon as it's done.

You certainly would need the original HW2 installed to play this mod eventually.
As previously said, HW2 is fun as hell on its own account anyway.

Thanks for the updates and still ever looking forward to more!

Cheers!

You can play Homeworld 2 via GameTap now. I wonder how that works with mods. Regular Homeworld 2 is pretty cheap however.

My memory can sometime be shotty but the razors in WC IV were flown by ace pilots right? I thimk I remember it saying pirate ace, if I am right why would they be upgraded to thunderbolts?

Razors in WC4 were flown by both aces and regular pilots.

Never played Wing Commander 4. So, of course, I have a question, will this take you through WC IV as an admiral instead of a pilot?

For the same reason that Thunderbolts exist and we don't just have one fighter to begin with. The Razor is a light light fighter. The Thunderbolt is a heavy fighter with bomber capability. Whatever pilot you have, the ships have different functions. An ace pilot in a Razor will do different things than an ace flying a Thunderbolt.

I believe these are the prettiest renditions of WC craft in a game engine.

Congratulations.

PS: I'm not saying that other mods aren't good looking, but I do have the feeling that HW2's engine looks better than Vision.

This might be off topic, but do you guys think (if this is released before the year is over,) that this mod could win the annual Wing Commander Mod of the Year?

I'm pretty sure there are still months and months of work that have to be done yet. It definitely won't be released before the cutoff for nominations ends and voting begins. With that in mind though, it doesn't have to be finished. Most nominees for Fan Project of the Year have been incomplete.

Heh, then we can get our beta :P just kidding. He told me he needed to remodule the AI, why not use the AI in the game already? Is there something he needs to add?

Absolutely. Just email the vote@ link from the nomination update on the front page. There's no need to rush out a beta for the purposes of this contest though. The cut-off for nominations is probably next week, but as I said above, projects do not have to have released anything to be eligible (simply making progress like you have also qualifies).

Even though its months away from completion, I wouldn't be surprised if it was one of the few prominent nominees of this years competition, maybe even winning a runners-up spot in the end. Other than this mod, I think Standoff and Pioneer are the real serious contenders for the Fan Project of the Year award.

Sounds good, Aaron!

But as Chris mentioned, don't feel compelled to put out a Beta before it's ready or as a motivator for the nominations -- I'm sure the significant progress you've made over only a couple of months of development is cause enough.

Anyway, I can't wait to play the public release whenever it comes -- hopefully I'll have a laptop soon, so I won't be stuck out on the frontier when the fleet action goes down!

Cheers,

Bryn

ok everyone a pre-beta release is ready. i have had a friend work on a game loader that makes it easy to run the mod. however please note that this is pre-beta. many things are still not complete in terms of gameplay. graphics and ships are final but AI is a major loophole. i require feedback in terms of multi-player stability. i dont have two machines at home or else i would know how well it works. i remember bryn said it didnt work in multiplayer when last he tested it, im hoping it has better support now. at this time i am happy to announce that lehah is going to be point man for testing of all new versions of the mod from here on out. starting with the pre-beta release that i am waiting to upload somewhere. lehah is going to let me know where i can upload it. hold tight everyone. expect news soon btw the mod now has a name for the pre-beta release version. as of right now the mod is named, Wing Commander 4 - Aggression.

~~~, the subtitle "Aggression" is a bit dull. Why not come up with something that has a point, such as Wing Commander IV: The Black Lance Incident, or anything else like that.
It's a matter of taste. "Black Lance Incident" sounds a bit dull to me (and easily confusable with WC4, which is referred to as "The Black Lance Affair" in things like the Prophecy Official Guide). I would probably take the "4" off.
I always liked the idea of putting admiral or some kind of commander's name in the title (fleet commander?) since it's unique among WC games in that you're in command of an entire fleet rather than a pilot.
PRE-BETA DOWNLOAD IS HERE:
http://download.wcnews.com/files/mod...ld_preview.exe
http://files.filefront.com/wc4_01aex.../fileinfo.html
Notice: this is pre-beta download - first version ever. no AI support at all. The multiplayer test is not complete it may or may NOT work. Also the loader is in its first stages it will improve so dont be alarmed if it takes long to start the game or anything. any questions just post here and i will get to them dont worry.
How to install:
1)Download the wc4.exe file from filefront
2)copy the wc4.exe file into the following folder ($:\homeworld2\bin\release\) where $:\ is whatever drive and path you installed homeworld2 on.
3)run the wc4.exe file - a loader will open up, click the launch button - it will take a few minutes to unpack all resources and will automatically run homeworld2 and the mod.
4)enjoy.
Yeah, about the multiplayer -- I tried to get a multiplayer match going across the two networked PC's at home in early September and while the two game installations were able to "see" each other and connect, both instances would quit as soon as the map was loaded. The mod ran smoothly on both PC's in single-player and this conflict still occurred when alternating the creation of a multiplayer session on both PC's (i.e. PC1 would Create a game, while PC2 woud Join and vice-versa) -- I assumed there was probably just some minor code changes that the mod introduced which needed to be modified for a multiplayer match to work, so hopefully if there is still a conflict this can be resolved easily once the beta is available and people have a chance to experiment with multiplayer connectivity.
Some rather generic names I'd scribbled down a few months ago included:
- Wing Commander: Sector Command(er)
- Wing Commander: Fleet Admiral
- Wing Commander: Space Marshal
- Wing Commander: Officer Corps
- Wing Commander: Fleet Action (I believe Fleet Action was the name of the previous HW1 mod under development, so using this name may not be suitable -- of course, there's the Fleet Action WC novel too)
- Wing Commander: Action Stations (again, the reference to the WC novel of the same name could be misleading)
However, I'd defer to whatever you guys come up with, especially as the mod is Aaron's baby. Anyway, can't wait to spread the word and eventually play the beta -- do you have any new teaser pics to whet the appetite?
Cheers,
Bryn
i like fleet admiral. however i thought the name would sound nicer in reference to war or conflict. i wanted to make it 'wc4: the cold wars' but then again they were anything but cold wars.
The throne that I won by blood and sweat, by Crom, I will not sell
For promise of valleys filled with gold, or threat of the Halls of Hell!
Congrats on the testing gig, LeHah.
I'll have to wait two weeks to try it out (going home for Christmas), but have no doubt it will be a blast!
So, sans AI, all the factions and ships/facilities are included, as well as the audio and music?
Cheers,
Bryn
"Fleet Commander" (As suggested by Whoopass)?
"The Borderworlds Conflict"?
Anything else? Its all I can come up with.
