SO broken links
Iīve been trying to download the main package of Secret Ops from www.secretops.com but the download links are not working. Earlier this week LOAF got aware of that and said that either he would contact Origin to fix the links or he would post the file in the CIC.

Ok, thanks!
Also, there are many many guests today visiting the CIC. Any special reason? They shattered the CZ previous attendance record. EDIT: mmm, I checked those guests and theyīre almost all "Inktomi Spiders"... what are they? Yahoo Web (Matrix) Agents?

They're web spiders... they index for searching. For some reason they decided to go kind of over the top yesterday... They appear to have gotten confused and had a huge number of processes wasting time on dynamically created pages that do nothing except complain that you have no passwords... I assume they got confused, at least, as I've never seen spiders do that here before.

That is so wierd. Before, it never went over 30 and barely did last night, now all day it seems, there are bunches of these spiders keeping the number above 28.

Google's spider comes by from time to time. This time though, there were over a dozen inktomisearch spiders going over the board. It sucks, because it screws up our statistics. I've never even heard of them.
The full (English) Secret Ops starter package is up: ftp://ftp.wcnews.com/files/so/secret...Ops%20Full.exe It's 112 megs, so you will want to use a download manager like Getright. |

Damn it, this morning there are 30 Googlebots on here. I don't mind so much since Googlebot is much cooler than Inktomisearch, but why have the bots suddenly started going haywire?
I wonder if there's some vbulletin bug.

Maybe a difference in your robots.txt between the two servers?

Whenever I hear about Inktomi spider scanners on the board, I think of big evil spidery robots invading the Crius system.

The same thing happened today on my forum running 2.2.9 so it's nothing to do with the board upgrade, just Inktomi going mad...

You know...it's all well and good that you decided to host that game for us, thanks a bundle.
But did anyone test to see if it worked? I did. And guess what? It didn't. I have no idea what the problem with it is, I think it's related (this is my own personal opinion) to the thread about the broken speech.tre file. Whenever the installer gets to that file it seems to stop and start over with installing it several times. It claims to be done, and dumps a few files into the Secret Ops installation directory, and even opens the launcher, then a blank black screen before it just crashes. Anyone got any ideas about this? I was wonder (personal opinion again) if Origin had a programmed in timelock on it, that made a critical file "shut down" after an extended period of time, to prevent people from passing their program around. Dosen't make much sense, was just a thought. Some help on this would be nice... |

Then can you explain what's happening so I can fix it and put Secret Ops on my new laptop? I would send the old folder over...but I've modded that version of SecOps so much it's not anything near the original, and there's no way in hell I can fix it all now.
Any thoughts? [EDIT] FYI: I just sent the entire folder over to my laptop and attempted to run it, and it failed miserably. Is Secret Ops compatiable with XP? Last edited by Jason_Ryock; 07-05-2003 at 02:12. |

As for speed, I've tried all manner of tweaks and things to squeeze out the best transfer rate that I could in Windows 98. I could sustain about 180 k/sec from the fastest servers. Instantly after I installed Windows XP I was getting a good 212 k/sec or so from lots of places. Maybe I'm just lucky, but I can't argue with an across-the-board 15% jump in bandwidth. |

No it isn't. The question is not why he has all that space, but is eating away at 268GBs? Hades, have you installed a bunch of pacmans on your machine?

I'm one of the hard-drive peons of WingNut, sporting a paltry 100GB, but even so, I still have 80GB free. It's because I don't have gigs and gigs of hentai. I need to get to work on that.

I've a question reguarding Special Ops. Must the files be installed in my Prophecy folder? Also does the Secret Ops file include full Audio (Sound Effects, Speech, and Music)?

Secret Ops is a completely separate game to Prophecy. Prophecy doesn't even need to be installed. If the package you downloaded was the 100+ meg one, it has full speech and music.

Wow, over 200Gig HD, I fell puny. Up until a year and ahalf ago, I had a 4 gig HD. Now I have a 20 gig and about 10 gigs free (considering about 4 gigs are TV shows). Though I do have a tendency to burn everything I download to CD/DVD.

What are you using for your browser and FTP client? Perhaps your browser/client doesn't like spaces in filenames. The link on the files page works because I just tested it.

I get an error message which says:
"Internet Explorer cannot download ...opsfull - Secret Ops Full.exe from ftp.wcnews.com. The server returned extended information." Never mind, I got it working by entering first into ftp://ftp.wcnews.com/files, then clicking on "SO", than clicking on the file. But still, it didnīt work by clicking the link on the files section.

Works fine here with Internet Explorer and Mozilla. Maybe the spaces are throwing off your IE for some reason.
Or did you have a number of other downloads going from the FTP? |

Anyway, maybe it has something to do with the spaces. After all, in the error page I attached earlier IE turned all the spaces into ī%20sī...

That's normal, %20 is the HTML entity for a space. If you put space or some other non-alphanumerical character in a URL, your browser will automatically convert the symbols.
Hmm. Can you try the files.shtml link again? |

It works fine now, thanks a lot KrisV. Though this time I tried in my home computer... when I have the chance Iīll try it again on my friendīs computer (where I was having trouble) just to check if it works fine there too.
