New CIC Logo Live Today (April 20, 2005)

At the CIC we follow a lot of traditions and are generally resistant to change. Occasionally there is talk of refreshing the layout and graphics of the site, but we really like the current look of things. The most prominent graphic is our site logo, which we are extremely attached to. Keen-eyed visitors might have noticed that the background of our logo is an actual screenshot from Wing Commander 4. Recently AD was able to help us pinpoint the original scene in the DVD version, and we've integrated that into our design. In this process we've managed to retain the same logo and its roots as a Wing Commander screenshot while sharpening it up quite a bit. You can see the comparison here. The little red ship is actually a Pirate Frigate and the blue bits are a Longbow and Arrow. The green is part of an asteroid.

AD has prepared a 17 meg divx video clip of the briefing that our logo originated from, and BradMick has created a high resolution avi wireframe render of the scene.

I know we talked about this a bunch before hand on #wingnut but now that I see that alternating animated GIF, It impresses on me how much of an improvement this is. And to think Most people wouldn't have even noticed if we didn't tell them!

Nice!

Salesman: Would sir like to complement his EX-DTV purchase with a subscription to the TCN Premium news package for an additional 499 credits per month?

Customer: Umm... well I have an extended tour of duty coming up and don't get that much downtime, when I do, I intend catching up on my EX-DVD collection, not listening to wildly optimistic and filtered accounts of Confederation advances against the Kilrathi.

Salesman: Did I mention that TCN Premium includes The Home Front, a 24/7 on-demand, interactive show for Wingnuts, broadcast in full EX-DTV glory and hosted by Barbera Miles?

Customer: I'll take it!

Have you just updated the CIC logo with the clearer image or are other sections of the site with game images due for enhancement as well? For some reason I thought that this wireframe image was from WC3. Looking at the alternating gif, it really highlights the improvement, but as AD mentioned, most of us probably wouldn't have noticed unless you guys pointed it out!

Cheers,

BrynS

I'm not sure what you're thinking of here. There are no plans to make new nav map images for the Game Guides. There probably isn't much room for improvement there, since they need to reflect what you see in-game. Map table animations are fun to look at, though.

Excellent. The basics of the logo are faimliar, and the changes subtle. You guys should've kept silent and see how long until someone notices. A nice improvement!

There are certain graphics around the site that have become outdated and are due for recreation, but there isn't anything planned at the moment. We're mostly busy catching up with other things for the foreseeable future before we get around to much of that.
