In theory he could have died if you were on an early losing track that was never destined to reach the later game where he defected. But the way the mission tree works, Proxima and such take place lower down and the clip was deleted from the PC version.

I remember seeing it on the PlayStation version a looooong time ago, and I could never get it again. Maybe it was a hallucination.

Tom - It looks like it is - but is that off of the PC version cd's?

I've been trying to work on a solution to extract the videos from the playstation version (which actually looks to be higher quality... no "sticky" pixels for example). I know I can screen capture them (using epsxe emulator, which works well with a bit of tinkering by the way) but idealy I would like to extract the actual video files embeded in movies1.lib file (2,3,4 respectively for each CD). For the most part, All the PSX video playes cannot see the files. But PSound extracted sound effects, and PsxMC extracted the midi sequences). Another program however (MC32 aka movie converter 3.4) was able to see the videos listing them like on the wc4dvd sc_012a.wv etc. However an attempt to convert them gets the error message that the file is too large and asks that I use another editor to edit the script.

I am at a loss as to how to extract the wv files from th lib file and then to convert them to uncompressed avis (i would compress them again after). Plus I am not sure of the nature of the wv files either.

Any help anyone can provide is appreciated.

Yeah, it's from the PC Version. Sorry that I can't help you with your problem, but I never had a Playstation. So I never tried extracting videos from playstation CDs.

The Hobbes' video is in Wing Commander III for the PC -- I seem to recall that there was a special 'hacked' save game file that could be used to view it some years back.

One way to get the PSX Vids would be to hook up your Playstation/PS2 to a VCR, record the FMV to a blank video. then use something like WinTV where you can attach the device to a VCR and record the tape to mpeg/avi format. Therefore having the PSX vids in either mpeg/avi format for WC to enjoy

A couple of things... This would kinda defeat the purpose for why I want to do this. Plus it would require trying to play every single option available. And, as soon as I pass the feed through a vcr I have compromised any improvement in video quality. I can play the PSX version on my PC but again the same issue arises where, it would be a hassle to get all the videos. It does look decent when I use fraps to do a video capture, but that really isn't worth trying to do for more than just to show people the aprox. quality and to show that it is the psx version working on my PC.

The VCR/blank tape step in the middle isn't even necessary. It's a straightforward process to hook up your console to your capture card and capture the video you record there. However AD is trying to get very high quality source videos, and this process can result in a noticeable loss of quality.

There used to be a program called PlayStation Media Player that could extract videos, images and sounds from PlayStation game CDs into whatever format your computer could encode into.

However last I checked it didn't want to work correctly on anything except Windows 95, 98 and ME

For some reason WC III and IV used different Vid Formats than other PSX games

I've tried just about every different version of the kind of program you mention to no success. The closest I've come was with MC32 (movie converter ver3.4) in which I could see some of the embeded files but not extract them because the program figured the file was too large. I am running winxp so I'll try changing the compatibility to win98.

But if anyone has had any success in a proper win9x environment, let me know. Like Topgun said, I think the problem is wc3,4's oddball file format.

Looks good.. if you have a less compressed version, we can easily post it at the CIC to share with people without using up all your bandwidth.

I would be happy to send you a less compressed version. I just experimented a bit with different codecs and bitrates, but the video doesn't look much better than in my first version. The source isn't the best. The WC3 videos have a resolution of 320x160, so there isn't much to begin with. I made a divx version with 970kbps video and 128kbps mp3 audio, which has 6.9MB that I could send to you.

If you want to toy with it, you can always resize the video and use some of the divx codec options to either smooth or sharpen. You dont loose any quality and the end result is (artificially) better looking. But you take a hit in file size.

This is definitely in the PC version as I saw it myself when I was playing - I remember the look Cobra gives when the camera goes to her.
I didn't use any downloaded save game either...

Same for Flint.. I believe their reactions are reused in other funerals. Hobbes can't die though.. what would happen when he is supposed to defect? You can launch, arm a full salvo of missiles and try to destroy him.. he is invulnerable. There is just one mission where there would be potential, Proxima 1, if you were to go there from versions of Tamayo, Blackmane or Delius, but I don't believe the game ever unlocks his invulnerability.

I'm telling you that it's definitely possible on one mission at least - when you go down a path that will lead to death for humanity, Hobbes can die. I don't recall him saying anything over the comms when being blown up though...

Now that you say it, I remembered that I saw it, before I had ability to extract the videos. So I dug up my old notes I made back in the days. I made a few instruction lists, what I had to do during the game, so that when I played the game through a few different ways, I had seen all the different videos that were there.
In my notes I made a remark, that you had to lose mission F3 and had to let Hobbes be shot down. After that you are in the Proxima losing tree. So I think it is possible I made the note because Hobbes could die in that mission.
F3 is the last mission in the Blackmane tree after you lost the Locanda bioweapon mission.

Better -
you can only loose Hobbes if you're loosing the game.

@ChrisReid: The last part of the funeral (reaction shots and such) are the same for all funerals. The funerals are one big file, which I split up and then can put together again as needed. There are many alternative takes during the funeral depending on who is still on board.
Here is my list of all the possible funeral scenes:
115_1 Funeral Cobra a
115_2 Funeral Cobra b Flint
115_3 Funeral Cobra b Eisen, Rollins, Rachel
115_4 Funeral Cobra c
115_5 Funeral Flash a
115_6 Funeral Flash b Maniac
115_7 Funeral Flash b Blair
115_8 Funeral Flint a
115_9 Funeral Flint b Maniac
115_10 Funeral Flint b Blair
115_11 Funeral Flint c Vaquero
115_12 Funeral Flint c Eisen, Rollins, Rachel
115_13 Funeral Flint d
115_14 Funeral Hobbes
115_15 Funeral Maniac a
115_16 Funeral Maniac b Flash
115_17 Funeral Maniac b Eisen, Rollins, Flint
115_18 Funeral Maniac c Flint
115_19 Funeral Maniac c Blair
115_20 Funeral Maniac d
115_21 Funeral Vagabond a
115_22 Funeral Vagabond b Eisen, Rollins, Rachel
115_23 Funeral Vagabond b Flint
115_24 Funeral Vaquero a Blair
115_25 Funeral Vaquero a Flint
115_26 Funeral Vaquero b
115_27 Funeral Vaquero c Eisen, Rollins, Rachel
115_28 Funeral Vaquero c Blair
115_29 Funeral all cont. a
115_30 Funeral all cont. b Vaquero
115_31 Funeral all cont. b Flash
115_32 Funeral all cont. b Vagabond
115_33 Funeral all cont. b Flint
115_34 Funeral all cont. b Maniac
115_35 Funeral all cont. b Eisen, Rollins, Rachel
115_36 Funeral all cont. c

So for example Funeral Cobra:
You start at "Cobra a" and then comes "Cobra b" which there are two different versions. One with the reaction shot of Flint, the other with Eisen, Rollins, Rachel. After that "Cobra c", "Funeral all cont. a" and so on.

Blair's funeral is a separate file with MANY different reaction shots.

Origin probably had to blaze a few trails with WC3... that's probably the reason why WC3 and 4 are so quirky. Specially the video part.

WC4 got rid of the funerals, but had the newscast audio played over the gameplay part. pretty nice too.

WCIV had the scripted funeral of Vagabond. Which also gets it on 24.
