I'm not sure if this is a pointless effort, given the limitations or design decisions of Vega Strike as compared with Privateer, but I decided to have a go at bringing back Gemini Gold, if only as an experiment. Unlike the original project, I aimed to stick even closer to the original Privateer - changes and additions can always be brought back in after achieving a stable baseline.

Keep in mind I know next to nothing of the disagreements between the Gemini Gold, Privateer Remake, and associated projects over the years. Don't presume I'm making any comment one way or another about the various projects, this was an independent experiment.

There are a number of engine bugs and other blockers for a Privateer-like experience. I submitted a few pull requests, but otherwise, I think I've taken this as far along as I care to for the time being. At least it's a lot closer to a Privateer experience than when I first forked the project - a lot fewer bugs and crashes. I'm only mentioning my efforts here in case anyone wants to have a try and/or continue the effort. I understand there is some sort of project going on to recreate the authentic Privateer experience (and I intend to look at that if it ever becomes open-source), but I took this on as an attempt to revive an apparently dead project that was at least once recognised as a CIC Fan Project of the Year, if I recall correctly.

We leave the old stories behind and focus on the nice present and the nice progress, as every *happy camper* should.

I played all the way through GG and loved it. Is your build fully working? What's involved in getting it running?

Plenty of issues. It's a wall of text, I know, but the docs list what's been resolved, needs further research, needs engine (Vega Strike) corrections/changes, etc. Particularly notable are erratic ship AI, lack of ship-to-ship collisions (some asteroids will still damage you, though - before I softened it, it was basically instant death), and duplicated 'now entering an automatic landing zone' messages.

The original release used Python 2. The repository I forked from appears to be the original Subversion code and assets, but adapted for Python 3. From there, it was a long journey of trial and error (a lot of error too), to get where it is now. Balancing speed and manoeuvrability is tricky. I was focusing on data accuracy - nav point positioning, bases, commodities, ship load-outs, etc - rather than game-play.

Early on I felt like it was a dead end, but I persisted anyway. I feel where I've got to is a good place to stop, at least for the time being. Being open-source, others are welcome to continue, if they wish.
