Long Live the Confederation!
Last year, the Portland Retro Gaming Expo premiered the first ever display of Roberta Vaughan's FMV Zone, a carefully curated and wonderfully impressive display of artifacts that tell the story of full motion video games. At the time, we were honored to loan a Wing Commander Prophecy flight suit so that Wing Commander could be included (where it certainly belong!). Last weekend, the FMV Zone was displayed a second time for PAX West… with a new, permanent addition to represent Wing Commander: Admiral Tolwyn's Black Lance uniform from Wing Commander IV! Here's a picture by Sam Machkovech that captures the uniform:

And here's a great video from Andy that walks through the whole display. So cool!
They asked us for an update to the sign and this is what I sent in; I'm not sure what might have changed before the final display! Here's hoping they run this show again real soon.

This uniform was worn by actor Malcolm McDowell as Admiral Geoffrey Tolwyn, the sinister antagonist of Wing Commander IV: The Price of Freedom (1996). This is Admiral Tolwyn's "Black Lance" uniform which serves as a major reveal that kicks off the final race to the game's conclusion. The player, represented by actor Mark Hamill's Colonel Christopher Blair, is charged with infiltrating a secret starbase operated by a shadowy enemy force. Once this mission is accomplished, the game plays a lengthy (9m48s) climactic cutscene that solves the story's enduring mysteries. In this scene, Tolwyn steps out of the shadows to brief the enemy forces wearing this black uniform instead of his familiar blue Confederation admiral costume. This is the major reveal that he is actually the monstrous leader organizing the genocidal attacks on humanity. The scenes with this uniform were shot from July 3rd to 6th, 1995 at Ren Mar studios in Los Angeles, California. The Black Lance uniforms were designed by costumer Karen Mann. They are meant to reference the black uniforms of the Nazi Schutzstaffel (SS), immediately connecting Tolwyn's hideous eugenics plot to history's similar terrors. The Black Lance shoulder patch and lightning bolt were designed under the guidance of art director Chris Douglas to easily express the same fascistic imagery. The triangular bolt logo was used extensively in Wing Commander IV's marketing, especially in the United States where it was a key visual element of the game's box.
The suit is an example of what might be called the high water mark of Full Motion Video game development. Electronic Arts invested well over $14 million to produce Wing Commander IV, most of which went to its massive film shoot. The game was shot just like a Hollywood movie on 35mm film with over two dozen sets and hundreds of crew working together. Roughly fifty Black Lance uniforms were created to costume the pilots attending Tolwyn's rally. Since, with one exception, the Black Lance uniforms are not used elsewhere in the game they are a frequent example of director Chris Roberts' maximalist philosophy for crafting the game's tentpole cutscenes; he spared no expense! The other appearance of the Black Lance uniforms is worn by Roberts himself, who cameos in one during the game's closing cutscene in which he testifies to a tribunal that "I couldn't go on!". This uniform was originally donated to the Planet Hollywood restaurant in Los Angeles as part of the game's launch. Actors Mark Hamill and Malcolm McDowell were on hand to donate their props and costumes at the release party on February 8, 1996.
