Bandit LOAF
Long Live the Confederation!
Happy birthday! The Wing Commander movie club is two years old this week! On November 8, 2024, we were all feeling pretty lousy about the state of the world on Discord and so I suggested that we watch, what else, the Wing Commander movie together. We had such a great time talking and joking about the movie together that I thought: what if there were a reason to keep doing this? What if we start watching the movies that inspired Wing Commander? So I started pouring through old interviews and press kits and finding quotes where Chris Roberts would say this or that was inspired by Battle of Britain or Blade Runner and I turned those into our movie pool.
The next week we watched The Dam Busters and it has been a weekly source of fun and a great brief escape from the trials and tribulations of real life ever since! Over the past two years we've watched 102 club movies and 1 unofficial movie (Showgirls). We had one movie that took two weeks, Das Boot, and we missed one week due to an emergency. That makes 105 weeks… and there's more to come! The movie pool continues to grow as we pick out more references and in jokes and connections… there are still over a year's worth of movies waiting!
THIS WEEK we are celebrating our birthday with a VERY SPECIAL MOVIE that is available nowhere else. And we can't tell you what it is yet! The movie this week is ONLY AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD DIRECTLY. To join us, please check in with any of the staff in Discord for a link to download the movie before we start on Friday. It's something very special that we've put a lot of work into getting together and we're eager to get your feedback. We promise it will appeal to anyone that likes space combat… and we also promise that it is a real film and not some kind of AI experiment.
I look forward to seeing my friends and enjoying a movie that maybe I wouldn't have otherwise chosen if it weren't part of the club each week. And you're welcome, too! If you're looking for an online community, the regulars in #WingNut on Discord will be glad to count you in our ranks. Don't worry about not knowing the games or the culture as much as the old hands; we're here to get you up to speed, not to judge your level of passion at anything. Come watch a movie with us!
Where can I find a copy of the movie for the watch party?
This week's movie is ONLY available for download directly from our team. If you would like to attend Friday's event you must contact a WC:CIC staff member directly via Discord for a link to the file. Please put in your request by 9 PM Eastern on Friday to allow yourself time to download and prepare to take part. The link will not be available after 9 PM Eastern. We will reach out to regular attendees directly wherever possible!
How do we watch the movie together?
It's pretty low tech! Simply join the Wing Commander CIC Discord on Friday and we will be chatting (in text) along with the film in the main channel. Everyone who wants to join in should bring their own copy and we will count down to play them together at 10 PM EST. Everyone is welcome and we encourage you to join in the conversation; sharing your thoughts helps make the experience better for everyone!
How can I help pick future movie club movies?
The movie club movies are voted on each week by the Wing Commander Discord. The poll is typically posted 24 hours before each week's screening and the next movie is announced at the end. The choices for the poll come from a master pool of Wing Commander-related movies. If you would like to suggest a film for inclusion in that pool you can post it to this thread.
