This is fantastic, thank you!! Time to start working on a modernized Wing Commander 2 thanks to all the hard work done by Remi Leonard's libRealSpace....

You're welcome! I hate to be a downer though - WC2 wasn't built on RealSpace, and as I've learned painfully over the course of my work - RealSpace was barely an "engine" in any meaningful sense in the first place. As far as I can think of, literally none of the game formats are truly shared between the full set of "RealSpace games" beyond (sometimes) some of the basic structure... Even actual standard core formats like IFF don't survive unscathed, with Strike Commander in particular being guilty of outright violating it. Remi & Fabien's work is fantastic news for Strike Commander (and probably Pacific Strike), and all my best wishes to them; but it does need to be pointed out that "libRealSpace" is - for now at least - an aspirational name at best.

Relevant to point out though that I'm already working on WC2 through both WCAT (deep reverse engineering and improvements for DOS) and Confederation (modernised cross-platform rebuild). :)

@AllTinker do you by any chance plan to work on Privateer?
Is there anything specific you'd like to see? I think Originator already supports all of the media and text content. I've mentioned I'd like to make a sector viewer at some point. There's probably some minor Privateer improvements already pending for the next release, but nothing too major is coming to mind...

If you mean in terms of actually something playable, yes, it's on the list for Confederation - after WC2. That's a long, long ways off though. :D

I'm wrapping up work on the first release of TREPAK, which is a modding tool (read/write) for Privateer, Strike Commander, Pacific Strike, Wings of Glory, WC Armada, WC3, WC4 and Prophecy. Once that's done I'll have bandwidth to get the next version of Originator out finally - it'll be a big update!

Yes, this is what I had in mind. Good to know, I am sure the result will be great, no matter when it comes out 🙂🙂

Out of curiosity, what programming tools do you use?
Mostly Visual Studio (2022) and C++ for modern programming. Lots of small specialist tools, e.g. things like RenderDoc, the Valgrind suite (under Linux). For reverse engineering I generally use ImHex, and a lot of custom one-off tools. I write a lot of my own tools in general. For retro development I use CodeLite 18.1 (an old version, newer ones have been infected by LLMs sadly); for compiling/assembling for DOS I use OpenWatcom 2.0 for C, WASM for assembly, although I've been using a bunch of Borland Turbo Assembler for WCAT since it's a better fit (being one of the tools Origin used).
