I remember getting Wing Commander 2 on a CD with one of the Ultima Underworlds. It was my first experience of Wing Commander, and of gaming on a PC, and it was fabulous.

I played Wing Commander 3 on the first day of the summer holidays back in 1995, and it was like nothing I had ever seen before. My CD ROM drive wasn’t quick enough to play the movies smoothly, but it was still fantastic.

Then came Wing Commander 4. I was obsessed with it. Even now it is in my top ten of games of all time. The only thing I found wrong with it was a lack of a cockpit. Everything else to me was chef’s kiss.

Wing Commander Prophecy came soon after, and whilst it tried to emulate the carrier experience of WC1 (a downgrade in my opinion), it was still a fun experience and the new way the music went was definitely a cool, the s**t has hit the fan kind of vibe. It made my CPU run so hot, it melted the fan and it fell off. Okay, maybe it was an issue with my CPU fan…

In September 1998, we got the internet and I found wcnews.com. I have only been a lurker but I’ve frequented the site over the last 28 years (wow). I even went onto the mIRC chat (anyone remember Eagle? RIP). I can’t believe a site still has regular updates for a game series we haven’t seen since the last century. I’ve been downloading all the mods to get WC3 and 4 working at 60fps, installing the upscaled videos, and the games are still much more fun than a lot of the stuff that comes out now.

Anyway, I just wanted to say thank you, from a long time lurker who appreciates the people who keep the game and dream alive. Here’s to the next few decades.

Thank you very much for posting, I am sure everybody around here appreciates hearing this as much as I did. The older I get the better I understand that it's the people that matter in all of these, so I'm always so happy to hear a story like this.

Keep Wing Commandering! We'll be here... and you're always welcome.
