Veteran Spaceman
....and boy are they terrible.

Who, in their right mind called this an expansion pack? It's little more than an overglorified extra missions DLC, it adds nothing new to the game at all, sometimes it feels like the entire game is just an unending fleet of Jalthi.

Content aside, the story was actually nice, and my increasing despair at completing the game was matched by the constant doom and gloom the rest of the characters.
Also the SNES version opening cutscene was kinda cool, the Kilraathi look jacked as hell:

The difficulty is a common complaint for this game, but it's not really as hard as some people say it is, if anything some of the missions were halfway enjoyably challenging. The other missions however were just WC1 missions but with 125% more Kilrathi to kill.

Overall this game was not good at all, and I especially can't imagine buying this for full price back in the 90s.

Onward to Secret Missions 2! Can't say I'm looking forward to that but, might as well try.

Secret Missions 2 has a little more meat on its bones (new ship to fly, new wingmen, a more compelling story that sets up WC2)! The original Secret Missions was actually what we'd call a preorder bonus today; it's made from leftover parts of the original game and was intended as a bonus for people who bought the game straight from Origin. They shipped a retail version after Wing Commander was such a big hit.

Can you start SM1 with a new character like you can start RF without having to play Privateer? Ok, I know the latter doesn't make much sense from a storytelling view, but it is feasible, fun, and very expensive. Was that an indirect way to tell people to play Privateer first?

I think so

Yes you can, choose 'Start Secret Missions' when you run Wing Commander. Same executable as the base game, unlike SM2 which includes a new one.
