To sum it up: If you go full afterburners through an asteroid field, for some reason most of the asteroids seem to pass "right through you"... It still is possible for an asteroid to hit and actually collide with you (and if that happens it usually is lethal), but most of the time they'll pass through like thin air.

Not everyone. Seldom works for me - I'll get those that seem to find me eventually.
As for the rank, he may have just used the mission selector function to move himself straight to Kurasawa for the purposes of the demonstration.

To sum it up: If you go full afterburners through an asteroid field, for some reason most of the asteroids seem to pass "right through you"... It still is possible for an asteroid to hit and actually collide with you (and if that happens it usually is lethal), but most of the time they'll pass through like thin air.
Hmmm... I guess some programmers took some shortcuts and didn't implement path-intersection detection...just colocation detecation at discrete time intervals... Should have payed more attention to stability limits...

Everyday I think I know lots about WC and everyday this site makes me look like a chump!

A couple of notes about the video:
- A joystick definitely helps in aiming. Of course there are better players that do this with just the keyboard.
- Gameplay was at the same speed as the video. I found if I try to slow down DOSBox too much, the response becomes correspondingly sluggish.
- Yes, it was a gamble afterburning in the asteroid field. You will die if an asteroid hits you near the middle of your view port. However, also notice that when you afterburn in a debris field, it becomes less dense for some reason.
- It was just meant to be a demo rather than a serious play-through, so the mission selector was used.
- You need to command Bossman to break and attack or the third Rapier escort does nothing.
- Despite the joystick controls, note the fumbling aim when the player was near the Ralari

It's easy to miss.
When using the transfer program for converting WC1 save games to Secret Missions, hover the mouse cursor over the pilot's bunk instead of the head and you'll be given an option to select any mission from the Vega (main) campaign.

Holy crap was this mission frustrating!
Managed to complete it today at last. Don't know exact number of attempts it took me but probably between 20-30.
What worked for me:
1. Set guns to Full, missiles to Spiculum
2. Autopilot to asteroid field, and ignore Salthi
3. Tell wingman to "Form on my wing"
4. Aim for Ralari but don't autopilot, just tap afterburner to get there
5. Around 15,000km from Nav 1, the Ralari will appear on screen. Tell wingman to "Break and Attack"
6. Shortly after the Gratha will appear on screen. There is one that is closest to the Ralari coming in (approaching at 2 o'clock). Aim for that one and afterburn to get near it ASAP!
7. When Spiculum locks on, launch it. Once close, spam the other missiles (but save a couple) and shoot guns. My aim is to destroy this one asap
8. Aim for any other Gratha shooting at the Ralari and again kill it quickly
9. Once there are only 2 Gratha left, it becomes significantly easier since the other wingmen are keeping them occupied.
When I tried this strategy for the first time, I noticed it gave me a little bit more time before the Ralari was destroyed so I stuck with it and beat the mission after maybe 5 tries. Of course a whole lot of luck is involved!
