I've always believed that the best way to play Wing Commander 1 on modern operating systems was through the various DOSBox distributions. For years, like many others, I used that solution despite the well-known issues that come with it.
Recently, however, I started using 86Box. After spending some time testing it, I honestly feel that it's currently the best way to experience this game.
One thing I noticed immediately was that the game felt much smoother than it does under DOSBox, which really improves the overall experience.
I'm attaching a screenshot of my 86Box setup along with a YouTube video showing the configuration and the game in action.

Also, note the ridiculously large 10 MB hard drive I installed in the machine. Clearly, I wasn't worried about running out of storage space anytime soon!
Have any of you tried Wing Commander 1 with 86Box? What do you think about it?

I mostly test WCAT using 86Box, since it's vastly more accurate than DOSBox, and more convenient than real hardware for that sort of thing. The only emulator that I'm aware of which is more accurate is MartyPC, but that's (so far) only for earlier hardware. They're both great for development.

That's interesting. Unfortunately, WCAT is only available in English, and I haven't managed to translate the executable file without it being modified and reverting back to English afterward. Otherwise, I would definitely have tried using it in another language. Thanks for the information about MartyPC, though — I might give it a try for testing purposes.
