This is so wonderful. I couldn't find an item on it in the change log, but both WC2 and WC feel much smoother in this release. Am I imagining it, or did you add extra frames? Also the blue->black space is such a great idea. It looks much better. Maybe my experience with the classic Wing2 frame limiter is warping my sense of this. The experience feels very fresh and smooth in this release.
...anyway.
I have some joystick debugging info for you:
I was lucky enough to recently find a Microsoft Sidewinder 3D Pro, which has an analog mode. Further, it has a switch that purports to switch between "CH Flightstick Pro" and "Thrustmaster." These only seem to affect button behavior, the stick calibration seems the same.
In both cases, this is what I experience in pure DOS:
The main stick axes affects the rotate/throttle axes:
1. If my main stick axes are forced to the upper left corner, WCAT calibration range works perfectly with the trottle and rotation axes.
2. If the main stick is simply centered, the throttle-rotation axes seem to behave strangely and overflow.
3. If I move my main stick (anywhere away from the top left corner), it will affect the throttle-rotation axes in difficult-to-pin-down ways.
I am hoping point 1 is the most useful artifact for making this range of joysticks work. Let me know if you need any more information.
If I boot into Windows 98, it goes into digital mode (I presume), and through the Windows game controller configuration, it is able to transmit perfectly detectable joystick behavior to WCAT. I've never experienced rotational rolling and throttling in pre-Wing3 -- it's really adds to the experience.
Another thing I am noticing:
In Wing 1 only:, with my throttle axis set to linear, max throttle seems to only do half of the hornet's speed range (0 -> 210).
In Wing 2, I get the full range on the Ferret (0 -> 500).
For Wing1, I workaround this by setting the throttle to relative.

Thanks for working on this project. It truly brings the intended experience of these games back to life.
