Bandit LOAF
Long Live the Confederation!
Earlier this summer, we put together a quick 'atlas' of Wing Commander Academy that shows how consistent the locations are in each episode. Well, the natural next step is to take a look at the interstellar locations in the Wing Commander movie. You might be surprised by how much thought went into them… and just where they appear on our familiar map of the Wing Commander universe!
The film begins by explaining its geography. We open on a spectacular Pilgrim star map and travel via pan from the Sol System to Scylla and then to the Vega Sector and Charybdis as gold effects highlight the locations we'll see in the story ahead.

By looking at the entire map created for the introduction we can see that it conforms to the Wing Commander Universe map created for Wing Commander Prophecy! "Vukar Tag" is even visible as the camera pans across the map in the film, quite a distance for an idea from a tie-in novel to travel! You can study both with these enormous images. Note that details like Pegasus' location and the various military forces were added to the intro digitally so they aren't always present here.

Pegasus
The introduction ends on the map's representation of the swirling energies of Charybdis, a quasar in the Vega Sector, and then we match cut to the real thing before panning over to an inhabited asteroid that the is labeled "VEGA FLEET HEADQUARTERS: PEGASUS ASTEROID BASE, ULYSSES CORRIDOR." The writeup in the Confederation Handbook further establishes that Pegasus is located in the "D-5 asteroid belt (Asteroid D-344R), Dakota System, Vega Sector". That's the star system in the original Wing Commander where you escort transports carrying a vaccine for Watson's Disease! We can also see asteroids and strips of a nebula when looking 'above' Pegasus.

This map of Charybdis jumps from the Confederation Handbook roughly matches the Wing Commander Universe's map's location of the Dakota System.

Pegasus & The Ulysses Corridor
This does not mean that Charybdis is in the Dakota System. Pegasus, in Dakota, is the starting point of the "Ulysses Corridor," a term that is repeated several times in the movie, which includes the expanse from Dakota to Charybdis and then from Charybdis to Earth. According to the script, the Ulysses Corridor includes the expanse between Pegasus and Charybdis and then the Confederation Handbook says that the jump from Charybdis to Sol is "the final leg" of the corridor. This is why when Angel identifies wreckage from Pegasus elsewhere in the corridor she has a line about how "concussion must have blown pieces of the station all over the sector." Much of the movie following the Tiger Claw's jump takes place in the Ulysses Corridor between Pegasus and Charybdis. We'll take a much closer look at that area of space later!
(Fun aside: I can remember someone coming to our IRC channel in 1998 from the set of the film in Luxembourg and the way they 'confirmed' their leak was real was that they told us the movie was set in the Ulysses Corridor… and no one believed them because that wasn't something mentioned anywhere previously in Wing Commander!)
In the next scene, we have another map that shows us exactly how this all works. Tolwyn uses an impressive 3D map table that first shows us the Ulysses Corridor from Pegasus to Earth (marked in yellow) and the that crossing this distance will take the Kilrathi 40 hours. He then shows his own fleet which seems to be five jumps away from Earth which will take 42 hours. The "race" behind the movie is established: the Tiger Claw must catch up with the Kilrathi and race them to Earth (delaying them as long as possible in the process).

Sol & Scylla
Next we see Tolwyn identify Taggart and the Diligent as traveling near Earth. We match cut his map to the real planet and then have a cool 'traveling' effect where the Earth gets further and further in the distance. As the scene goes on, we have another shot where the Diligent flies past an unidentified yellow planet towards what we will find out is Scylla. So where are we now? According to the script, the planet was Mercury: "Craft streaks by Mercury. We follow the Diligent as it heads towards the Sun. Ahead of it, far in the distance, we can just make out a flashing buoy. Behind the buoy, space seems to distort, shimmer ever so slightly." That said, it seems more likely that by the time the movie was finished it was intended to be Pluto. Scylla is outside the solar system in the intro map and the Confederation Handbook is repeatedly clear that Scylla is located between Pluto and the system's Oort cloud (and may have something to do with Pluto's unusual orbit): "it lies almost within reach (astronomically speaking) of humanity's birthplace, in the Oort cloud of Sol system, beyond the reaches of Pluto, where comets make their slow preparations for the long fall inward."

The Handbook also offers some lore intended to explain why Scylla can't be seen from… you know, Earth now: "Even if you are 100,000 kilometers from Scylla, you won't know it's there (unless you are looking with some extremely specialized equipment), but pass within 30,000 k of the beast and you'll be in her clutches..." It also implies that it may have been constructed by the Steltek and notes that it has only one jump point. And where does that jump point lead?
Enyo
This one is easy, thanks to the supertitles! The Diligent jumps from Scylla to the Enyo System in the Vega Sector, which is where the original Wing Commander starts! Enyo seems to have a blue star and some blue/white nebula gasses in part of its skybox. This is also where Maniac and Rosie fly their patrol.

The Tiger Claw's map insists that it will take four days and four jumps to arrive at the Charybdis Quasar. Paladin replies that "there's a class two pulsar eleven hours from here. We can jump there." And that's what they do!

Ulysses Corridor: Asteroid Ring & Brown Dwarf
... which brings us back to The Ulysses Corridor! Much of the rest of the movie will take place here, in the expanse between Pegasus and Charybdis that both the Tiger Claw and the Kilrathi are traveling through. We can immediately see a yellowish star and an asteroid field ahead of the Tiger Claw after it jumps in and that's what Blair and Angel are dispatched to scout. The script description tells us that this is a brown dwarf: "Two pin points of light pass by a deserted planet, the light from a nearby brown dwarf star throws it into half light, half shadow -- they resolve into the two Rapiers. The Rapiers head for an asteroid field circling the brown dwarf." Those Rapiers pass an unidentified planet (presumably the one labeled planet on one of the charts below) and head towards the asteroid field and brown dwarf.

Let's pause for a moment for some helpful graphics! These drawings were made by the movie's artists while it was in production. They show the intended features of and movements through the Ulysses Corridor! In the first one, you can see both the Jovian planet (Planet 415) and the asteroid field ad the brown dwarf the Tiger Claw is facing. The "black hole" is Charybdis, where they must reach by the climax.

Ulysses Corridor: Planet 415
Captain Sansky orders the Tiger Claw to proceed towards Charybdis via "the rings of planet four fifteen" which is the 'Jovian planet' on the drawn maps. Meanwhile, he dispatches Angel and company to attack the Kilrathi transports back near the brown dwarf that was previously scouted. So you can see he's moving ahead while letting his fighters stay behind… something a traitor might do, depending on your cut of the film. We get a lot of great shots of "Moon #1" and also you can see how Angel's wing uses it as cover when they're springing the ambush!

Ulysses Corridor: The Moons of Planet 415
The Tiger Claw then hides in a crater on one of the two moons.

... and then the Diligent hides in an asteroid field facing Charybdis knowing that the Kilrathi concom must travel that direction.

The Tiger Claw leaves the moon and heads towards Planet 415 and the Kilrathi fleet. Meanwhile, Blair and Angel head towards Charybdis and encounter the skipper missile in the process. Here we can see all of that, including how the Tiger Claw's action takes place between two moons of Planet 415.

Blair jumps back to the Sol System and arrives near what the on screen titles shortly identify as Venus. He leads the Snakeir away, heading back towards Pluto (or Mercury in the earlier conception, which makes more sense) and Scylla. We see one planet after he escapes, presumably Pluto again. Then Earth appears in the final beautiful shot of the Tiger Claw which follows the Kilrathi fleet to the system.
