This, too, shall pass.

A big reason these dorks are targeting nostalgia IPs so significantly is because it's high reward/low risk. The owner of the Pepsi Man IP isn't going to sue the guy knocking him off, but a million people are going to thumbs up a headline about the game they loved as twelve year olds coming back. But that's already diminishing returns in terms of media reaction and they are by nature greedy little idiots so you can already see them doing stuff like ripping off Adobe's subscription stuff instead. And every single person that is mouth agape at this grunting SOFTWARE IS DEAD THIS AMAZING TECHNOLOGY HAS MADE US ALL EQUAL about this is exactly wrong about what's happening. We find out every single time some new idea is going to democratize whatever process or industry or idea that the people that start out with the money and the power use that money and power to make sure they're still the people with the money and the power.

Once the hype fades, the reality is that these companies with lots and lots and lots of money and lots and lots and lots of lawyers and lots and lots and lots of lobbyists will do everything in their reach and power to both punish the people endangering their business model and AND to reset rework the rules of the system so that it works for their benefit instead of the new way these people are imagining. Did open source end Microsoft? No the figured out how to own it. Did mp3 piracy end the music industry? No, they figured out how to sell you mp3s that you own even less than you did before. It's the same every single time. And wouldn't you know it, it turns out that trillion dollar corporations have a lot more reach and power than frog avatar'd internet racists that can't even keep their dumbass mouths shut long enough not to get banned from the most chill forum on the internet.
