Hello, I'm following the instructions of this message but I'm not getting the speech in Wing Commander. I have read the rest of the thread and noticed that they don't play if you don't load the game through Wing Loader, but I'm doing that and still no voices. Not sure how I can fix this?

Firstly, thank you Destro for your excellent work on WingLoader!

I thought I would report a bug that I seem to be having though.
Every time I try and launch the Special Operations for WC2 through the launcher, it just seems to run the base WC2 program instead.
I can run the SO1_wcdx.exe and SO2_wcdx.exe files from the directory manually just fine, but the loader does not seem to want to run them.

I am using the latest 0.92 version that is linked here, and have followed the associated instructions with only a few exceptions:
1. I have installed the game to "D:\Games\WingLoader\Wing Commander II" (though Wing1 doesn't have any issues with the secret missions and it is similarly installed to "D:\Games\WingLoader\Wing Commander I")
2. I extracted the files from the GOG installation executable using innoextract.exe (to avoid needing to install), though it would seem all files are present.

My quick testing of WC1 and WC3 seemed to work just fine, so I only have this weird quirk with WC2.

I haven't started a WC2 campaign yet (was testing them all before starting to confirm the patching worked, etc) but I didn't think I needed to have a pilot to start the extra missions. Aside from that I am not sure what else might be causing this issue.
Sorry for the late reply, I've been busy lately. 0.92 had an issue with WC2 but the link on my post should be updated with the hotfix. I'll relink here. File name should have Hotfix in it. Just overwrite any Wing Loader files.

If that is not the case. When you attempt to run WC2 what appears in the Debug console? Does it give you an error message?

That is correct. The audio is actually playing from inside Wing Loader and not the game itself. Wing Loader peeks at the games memory and when the line comes up it plays the matching audio, so without Wing Loader there will be no voice overs.

In regards to it simply not working even with Wing Loader running. Is there any message in the debug window when you try to launch the game or when you should expect a voice over to play?

Hello. Thanks for answering, but not to worry any longer. This was a problem I was having with the SDL2 applications not correctly setting up the audio driver. It was also happening me with certain games running in ScummVM. I fixed the problem by resorting them to load DirectSound and that solved both the ScummVM issues and also the Wing Loader one.

I'm glad to hear that it's working now. Thanks for the update and have fun! 😛

Hi Destro,
Thanks for linking the Hotfixed 0.92. Guess I missed downloading this originally.
I can confirm that this fixes the problem with loading the secret missions for WC2.

Thanks for the help!

Destro , what about the updated on wc3w and now wc4w. I have to reinstall again to patch it ?

No, you shouldn't need to re-patch. The patch just adds the windows files needed for the games so as long as you didn't uninstall the game you should be fine. So the steps should be,

1) download game via gog or EA play.
2) patch with Wing Loader to add the windows files.
3) apply Mash Enhancement patches.
4) update Enhancement pack files when new updates rollout.

I haven't updated the install instructions to include WC4 so I'll do that sometime this week.

Not long ago I found this marvellous piece of software and started a new game of Wing Commander since over 30 years.
Its still fun.
- As playing the fist 6 Missions I watched some youtube - Gameplays. Can it be that the enemies behave better in space combat?
While fighting against two or more Kilrathi one attacks me from the frontnt while another attacks me from behind. I didn't see this in the videos I watched.
- The old cheat codes (Origin -k) do only work in the dosbox Version, not with wc_wcdx.exe. Editing the main.se was'nt successful, either. Since you can swap the savegames cheating is possible but is there a way to cheat with the wcdx Version?

I'm glad you are enjoying it and thanks for the kind words. The Kilrathi Saga (Which wcdx uses) does not use those flags to my knowledge. I haven't used cheats with the game so I'm not 100% sure but according to the cheats page here on wcnews

With invincibility off, open wingcmdr.cfg and wc2.cfg. Make sure they contain -k -b. Turning invincibility back on may cause your name to change back to CHEATER.

⮚ Player name is no longer replaced with "CHEATER" when invincibility is enabled.

https://www.wcnews.com/cheats.shtml#wc1

Backup your .cfg file because doing something wrong will cause the game to not work. Hopefully that is helpful and at least gets you on the right path! :P

Also I think Alt+I enables invincibility?

Thanks for the answer.
I tried -k -b (What is -b for?).
Then I was indestructable. Changed my name in Cheater. "Origin" does not work (Alt + Del destroys enemy ship in Target). Alt + I does'nt work, either.
Any way to change my name from Cheater back to normal? I deleted -k -b from the wingcmdr.cfg but it does'nt change back.
The best "cheat" I use now is to decrease the framerate to 11fps. Just like in the 90s :)
This give me much more time for targeting and navigating. Fits to my high age ;-).

Hi there, I have installed Wing Loader for the first time and played through WC1 over the past days. Man what a Blast this is with the speech mod. Thank you so much!

Now I went on to play the Secret Missions but there is no speech.
Is that a known issue? I am using the 0.92-hotfix version and the GOG Version of Wing1.

Hey! There are no voices in the secret missions, only the main game had voice overs released. I just added some of the com's voices that were the same as the main game to the add on's, but it was more of a test as some characters are not present in the original game.

Hello again.
I' making my way through Secret Missions 2: Crusade.
To get the full Music experience I installed munt, changed the crusade.cfg to "v r z" and set the midiconfig to 1 like mixer /listmidi told me.
I'm gettin Roland music in the intro, but not in the game. I have even set the sbtype to "none".
Is the ingame music and the sounds not changeable?

Anyone have issues with joysticks in WCII wcdx?

I patched up the GOG version of WCII with Destro's latest posted Wing Loader and wcdx. When running WC2_wcdx.exe, my mouse cursor gets dragged to the upper left corner of the screen as if the game is reading a mis-calibrated control device. But hiding, disabling via device manager, or straight unplugging all my control devices doesn't seem to change this.

When leaving one stick plugged in and hitting Ctrl-J, the game asks me to make sure auto fire is turned off then press any button, but pressing any key causes a CTD.

This is on Win11 - patched GOG WCII should be reading control devices directly from windows like the KS version right?

I didn't know about the midiconfig option that's neat, but from my understanding, the game does not use midi as it has the "high quality" streams that uses the default windows api instead. So I don't think there is a way to change the ingame audio device. Maybe removing the streams folder while that midi flag is on, however more than likely it will just cause the game to crash because it is missing the files.

Joystick can be tough, especially in WC2. From my testing, I have a (Saitek Cyborg Evo) I needed to restart my computer, connect the joystick, calibrate in Windows, then open the game with the joystick connected. Using the in-game Calibration has never really worked for me. If you connect the joystick while the game is running can cause joystick drift and sometimes stay glitched until the computer is restarted. Though, this is not a real fix or anything but just the steps that worked for me. I am working on a joystick wrapper for another project but still early days.
