Hello. I'm planning to dub the voices for either Privateer or Strike Commander. Is it possible to extract the voices from speech.tre and repack them?

Thank you 🥰

I just confirmed that originator can export all the speech for you (tools -> Bulk Exporter).
If you get to the point of having replacement speech I'm sure we can help you repack them.

Great! I'll prepare some voices for the first mission tomorrow. We could do a little test.

I've dubbed the voices of the girl from the mercenary guild. These are the lines she says in the office at the beginning of the game. If it works, I'll do the rest.

Here is the file:

I also did the voice of Betty, the plane's computer in Strike Commander. To test it out, just try to crash.

If I understand correctly, I have to decompress the .TRE file, replace the VOC files, and repackage it. But I didn't quite understand how to do it. Could someone explain it to me, please?

@AllTinker do you have anything for repackaging?
If not there’s no immediate way to do it - but I will take the time make a tool if no one else can help you if you have a complete set, although I’m afraid that I won’t have the free time for a couple of months

I wrote a Privateer TRE repacker a while ago for my own experiments, but a PAK repacker is also necessary. I don't think reliable tools for either are currently released anywhere. I realised with Privateer (and Strike) TREs the ability to read them does NOT equate to the ability to write them... :p I'm 99% sure I figured that out though.

I'll see if I can put something together; polish up my TRE repacker and have a go at a PAK one - they'd be good tools for the community to have - might not be until the weekend though!

They'll be specific to the Strike-era games, e.g. Privateer, Strike Commander... Later TREs were completely different. Origin and EA loved reusing the same names for formats (and even engines) even though they had little in common. :D

Hi. I managed to do it with Privateer.

1st: Using WCToolsBox 6 beta (not version 5), I extracted the Privateer TRE file with this command:

wctoolscmd.exe Priv1:PC:UnmakeTree PRIV.TRE

This created a folder called DATA containing all the files.

2nd: I converted the WAV files to VOC using an MS-DOS application called SBPLAY.

3rd: I replaced the VOC files in the DATA folder.

4th: Finally, I repackaged PRIV.TRE using this command:

wctoolscmd.exe Priv1:PC:MakeTree PRIV.TRE.SCR

The audio quality is low. I need to find VOC files of sufficient quality that won't crash the game.

I got the information from here:

It would be wonderful if you could get it for Strike Commander! I would be eternally grateful.

Oh no, I spoke too soon!
It's true I managed to replace some of the game's voice lines, but only those from the intro, which are unpacked.
I hadn't realized that in Privateer, the voice lines for planets and bases, like the bartender or the guilds, are in VPK files, and the voice lines during flight are in PAK files.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Quick update; I made some progress over the weekend, but it'll take a bit longer. Repacking PAK/VPK is a bit annoying.

My tool will also handle converting from/to appropriate VOC from WAV automatically, with modern resampling - should get the highest possible quality (still won't be great though :D).

OMG! Thank you so much for your hard work!

Thank you so much. I already have some voices. It's a long but steady process. By the way, if anyone who speaks Spanish with a Peninsular or neutral accent would like to participate, they're welcome.

I'm almost there... As usual it's become a bigger project than I initially planned. :D
I've noticed that the male bartenders' dialogue is in VPK files, and the female bartenders' dialogue is in VPF files. I assume it's the same file type...

Essentially yes; the extension does indicate some specifics about the file content/encoding. VPK and VPF are both just "Voice PAKs" though - maybe the different extension was just to keep things organised during development...

Just two things left to do on this tool, then I'll release it. :)

I already have many files prepared. Will your work also work for other games like WC2, or only Privateer? Thank you!

I believe everything you'd want for WC2 should be already supported by WCToolbox. The tool I'm working on will support Privateer, Strike Commander, Armada, WC3, WC4 and Prophecy.

I just need to finish WC3/4 support then I'll release the first version. It'll only support conversion of a few internal formats (e.g. Privateer/Strike voices via WAV, IFF in a generic sense via XML) to begin with, but I plan to improve that over time. :) Eventually I want to wrap it all back into Originator but that's a long-term thing.

You're right, I've managed to successfully replace some of the voices in the WC2 intro. Thank you very much.
I have no doubt that you are doing a great job. 🥰🥰🥰
