Thanks for the response @Destro ! By the way turning cheats on with putting Origin -b -k in the configuration file seemed to fix it somehow, and the problem dissapears in the secret missions version.
I got off work early today and I think I found the issue. The coms are on a separate Buffer than the game dialogue and that buffer often get cleared immediately with a value of 40. I had a safety in the script to ignore that... But If you mess with the framerate that value can change to 99 or 100 calling my code to stop the audio, so it never really has a chance to play. I made a new function to ignore all the values so when I release the next version it will be all patched up. Thanks for pointing out that bug!

@Destro - I may have missed it looking through the thread, but is the WC1 voice pack still a Kilrathi Saga-only mod or is it possible to modify the DOS version? I've been loving using WCAT with DOSBox Staging and the MT-32 music - the voiceovers would complete the effect!

There is a new Dosbox staging version that might allow it to work for the Dos version of the game. I still need to look into that but it is on my todo list. WCAT uses a different briefing file than Wing Loader so I'm hoping to port the WCAT one to Wing Loaders so the string match in both scenarios. Hopefully I'll get some time to work on that in the near future. :P

Destro I've been working on this for Dosbox, and have a (fully working) implementation as a C# and Windows Forms backend hooking to either Dosbox or Kilrathi Saga - i'm hoping to share something in a couple of days It's actually fairly easy with the Dosbox Staging API. It's not as pretty as your version at all, but as far as I can tell it works fully.

That's amazing, I look forward to testing it out! I'm hoping that I'll have time in the next month or so to play around with the new DosBox as it would be awesome if it would also work with the Dos version of the game!

OK, my plan is to upload the source code and the release package to github too, but I figured I'd share the application for now as I'm sure there's bugs I've not found. It's large mostly because of all the audio files (same as in Destro's package).
There's a readme file that explains how to get it up and running - but it boils down to download a couple of packages (dosbox and FFMPEG) and drop the game into some sub folders, and all will be well!

The only thing the readme doesn't explicitly cover is that because the audio files are so big, I have (for now) excluded them - so you will want to copy the other folders from your Audio folder into the Data\Voice subfolder. I left a data structure there and Angel's speech files so that you see what I mean.

Finally, Destro, I feel like i should apologise for the naming - I promise it's in the name of flattery only, so hopefully you're not too upset!

HAHA I love it! Hearing Shotglass speaking in Dos made me very happy!!!! Wing Loader was also an experiment for me to see if I could do it, so I'm very happy that it inspired you to do the same! Great work!!!!!

@Karrprince

Hello everyone,

Unfortunately I can't get WC1 to work.
I installed everything according to the instructions and I get the following error message.
Can anyone help me please?

Unfortunately, Wc3 doesn't start either.
I get an error message here too.
I'm probably overlooking the most obvious thing again

Thank you .

I know it's a llittle bit late. But we figured out the fatal error "0xc0000142"
Very strict non-standard settings in the defender exploit protection causing this error.

OK, source code is available on Github here: https://github.com/MadmanLegion/WingLoaderCSharp. I'll try and upload the full build too so (except for the games themselves).

This is quite good, very good! As it is the only one that I can use my joystick and have the voice, but sadly, no soundtrack, just the old school midi.
But there are two things.

It really needs the doxbox staging RC1, and not the final release.
Two, it does not work when there is a space in the name.
Example: "G:\Games\WingLoaderC\" Works
"G:\Games\Wing Commander\WingLoaderC\" does not work.

Er, let me take a look at the code - no reason the space should need to be a problem, but I didn't test it!
It needs Dosbox staging 0.83 for the API support, but again, should be easy enough to update now the official release is out.

It will probably be a few days before I can spend some time on it though.

When you say no soundtrack, you mean that DOS just gives you the midi version, not the Kilrathi Saga 'sampled' version?

Correct. The midi music, including sound effects. To be sure, I even copied the audio files from WingLoader into it. But still the same problem. I will try reinstalling later today and see if there is any change. I began using WCAT version too.

Great work though!

Wing Loader only adds the voice files. It does not affect the soundtrack or sound effects. The kilrathi saga provides the updated code for music & sound effects. Playing in the dos version would retain the original midi soundtrack and effects.

Ah, thank you for the clarification. I thought that with the dosbox-staging-debugger would expose these sounds and other effects.

I believe it technically can. However, since I was making Wing Loader for the WCDX version of the game it already had the updated Sound Effects and Music so I never even looked into it. As for the DOS version of Wing Loader by @Madman, it's more or less a port of my version of Wing Loader so it wouldn't include that feature.

Hello,

i'm confused, so i need help.

First of all, i installed Wing Commander III from GOG (DOS Version).
But what do I do next? I found two different sets of instructions. One of them says to follow these instructions
here the manual is
Wing Commander III
1) Install "Wing Commander III" via GOG / GOG Galaxy into the Root WingLoader folder. ex: C:\Games\Wingloader so the final result will look like C:\Games\Wingloader\Wing Commander III
2) Grab the latest version of Mash's Wing Commander III Enhancement Pack https://github.com/mattwells77/Wing_Commander_III_Enhancement_Patch/releases/tag/wc3w_en and copy the files into the Wing Commander III install folder. - You will also need libvlc_min_pack_3.0.20.zip from the downloads section and copy those files into the Wing Commander III install folder as well.
3) Grab ODVS's HD videos https://www.wcnews.com/wcpedia/Wing_Commander_3_HD_Video_Pack and extract them into the movies folder inside the Wing Commander III install directory. ex C:\Games\Wingloader\Wing Commander III\movies
4) Run Wing Loader and click the Gear icon at the lower right and select "Patch Wing Commander III".
WC3W.EXE"

On the other hand, there is a readme.txt file in the archive with the following instructions.
WING COMMANDER III (GOG) - Install Wing Commander III via GOG to the root WingLoader folder. EX: C:\Games\WingLoader - Once installed go to the Wing Commander III folder "C:\Games\WingLoader\Wing Commander III" and Right Click DATA.DAT and use something like 7zip to extract the contects to it's contents into the Wing Commader III folder. https://www.7-zip.org - You can now Delete DATA.DAT. (Unless you want to keep using the DOS version as well) - Copy the contents of the Patch file "WC3_GOG_to_KS.zip to the Wing Commander III folder and overwrite any files. - Included is Bitterman's patch for Wing Commader II with his Movie, Nav Screen & Flight Boot-up Screen Fixes. See Wc3_KSaga_Patch.rtf for details. - Grab the latest cnc-ddraw at https://github.com/FunkyFr3sh/cnc-ddraw (Current version 6.0) and extract to the Wing Commander III folder. - Run cnc-ddraw config.exe - Under "Display Settings" Set "Presentation" to Borderless - Under "Compatibility Settings" Set "Fix bad Performance and sound issues" on. - All other settings are at your discretion.

Which way is the correct one now?

Greetings

Go with the first install option. The readme is old (before Mash released his patch) and I must have just forgot to update it but all of that in the readme is automatic now with the "Patch Wing Commander III" button now. Sorry about the confusion.

Hey Destro,

Thanks for the quick reply, and thanks for clearing that.

By the way, Matt’s latest patch is wc3w_en_v0.14.6 and requires libvlc_min_pack_3.0.21.

I’ve done everything according to the instructions. Now I just need to get my joystick (Thrustmaster T.16000M) working, unfortunately, it doesn’t respond at all.

Greetings

No worries. Yeah get Mash's latest versions. And for joysticks. I think the game defaults to keyboard. I believe it is alt+j to switch to joystick mode. But that would be a game specific thing.

I've uploaded an new release to Github - it will let you put any dosbox staging release zip file (>=0.83.0 required) into the folder and will use that, and will also work when run from a folder with a space in the path. Technically the final release always worked, it just would replace the dosbox folder contents every time! One other observation, you absolutely CANNOT have a mount command in your main dosbox config file, or my commands fail and it immediately closes Dosbox again.

The music question is not something I really set out to solve, it's an interesting thought though - the game logic loads and unloads the midi files behind the scenes, so it should be possible to hook and play the alternate music. The trick is going to be suppressing the original music, while retaining that hook capability. If I get some time i'll have a look, but don't hold your breath!
