I'll stick up for it, too! I actually used it for quick reference pretty regularly. It was one of those sites I "knew".

(Edited to add - we'd be happy to host it if that would help.)

As requested, a selection of old material is refreshed and reinstated. If anything from the old site is wanted and still missing, let me know. I've done my best to add redirects for any old links, and Atlas Stellaire is now linked from the Privateer section.

Note: I've put the Singaporean ICIS manual conversion on hold indefinitely as I've learned that many of type faces it was using have restrictive licences that don't permit re-use the way I was using them previously. Oops.

Maybe it's just the nostalgia effect, but I'm surprised how good some of this stuff looks even when reviewing the old site. Thanks for giving me the motivation to restore it.

Wow! I can't believe it. This is exactly what I need for a project I'm working on. It's incredibly useful.
Awesome work! Thank you.
The community is fantastic.

This one is a lot of fun to play around with. Now… wouldn't it be cool to have the rest of the known Wing Commander universe in this sort of presentation?
I had been wondering about that too, of going beyond the Gemini sector. Personally, however, I'm not keen on just making stuff up - for this specific project I only used what I actually found from the game files.

Out of curiosity I dug into the WC2 mission data (even though the main games are mission-oriented and not persistent navigational data like Privateer) and alas, those co-ordinates are all effectively 2D: what you see in the 2D mission maps for WC2 (and presumably WC1 before it) is the actual map - there's no third dimension to make things interesting like the Gemini sector.

Aside: I should also note a small improvement since LOAF took those screenshots: I had meant to fix the squished aspect ratio from the original game being drawn to a 320x200 screen that was stretched in old VGA to be effectively 320x240. I finally did that, so the background sprites, base sprites, jump point sprites, etc are no longer squished - circular objects like planets are closer to a 1:1 ratio now.

(The same is also applied to the screenshots and animations for the older WC games on my site, generally.)

Yes, I am creating a comic anthology titled "Tales from the Gemini Sector," featuring individual stories about various characters.

Thanks to this map, it is much easier to choose where the story takes place and to remain more faithful to the lore.
I am looking forward to reading them! If you want, you can use the ideas I have in the thread about Privateer.

Yeah I wouldn't want that either.

I need to better spec this out, but what I'd really like to see is a web app with three layers: a 3D map of the entire galaxy, 2D maps of sectors and then variable pages for the different systems. So the ones in Gemini would have your incredible level of detail and others might range from just saying what skybox items we see there in games to text showing what lore we know. Some woldn't have much but others could have lots of details where they're known.

(And then we'd do stuff like wayfinding - what's the route from Kilrah to Vukar Tag - and we could show political changes over time... see the war being fought back and forth...)

Apologies! I've been taking care of my mom and have been stacking up a queue of updates when I can get a chance. I wrote this one soon after you first posted this.

Earlier I had also considered looking into the nav data for WC3/4/Prophecy/SO, since I recall their in-game maps show points in 3D, but again, these are per-mission points of interest and not something persistent like Privateer's world.

I think others are dabbling with a 3D view of the known WC systems, but I think the co-ordinates are just variations for aesthetics and not something fixed in navigational data like Gemini is. Even the sector view I made for Gemini, I could only replicate the 2D that we have in the game, because that's all that was made.

There's no need to apologise - I'm aware of your family commitments. I was just pointing out a recent update to this project that I thought was too small to be worth posting here, but noticed it was quite obvious (the squished aspect ratio) when looking at the screenshots.

Thank you so much! These are very interesting ideas. In the story I'm working on now, there's a similar idea to yours: the militia using surplus Broadswords after the war. But the idea you had, which I plan to use in the next story, is a Centurion with a Stormfire Gun.

Great minds ...

Good to know! I mean Stormfire is cheap to make and maintain, so it should be popular among civilians. Moreover, they are not expected to fly extended missions, so the finite ammunition should not be a problem.
