First pass aims to be pretty faithful - there's an awful lot that's improved just by adding momentum, it makes it a lot easier to land laser shots and brings gunplay into the mix (the first mission of WC4 is such an odd choice as it really shows off how hard it is to hit anyone with lasers).
I do think we'll launch with an altered missile stats option however, balancing the improved gun play with less effective missiles.

Atmospheric missions we do want slightly altered dynamics in the atmosphere, Defiance is a fan of aerial combat games and wants to take it pretty far but that would be optional.

The big unknown is the AI - I think if we get some AI with good avoidance of terrain and asteroids that'll already a long way to improving the experience.

Other than fixing bugs from the original mission scripts as we find them that's about it - feature creep can kill a project like this. There's so few of us, and frustratingly I think it's only a matter of months of full time work away - but what that translates to in the odd salvaged hour here and there (and not even that lately) is anyone's guess.

Actually this makes sense in-universe as the Confed is trying to cut down costs. Thus fighters, especially Hellcats, may be armed with watered down versions of the WC3-era missiles or with older ones, which is the same from an efficiency perspective. This is also consistent with the in-universe weapons and fighter development (e.g. the torpedo and the Hellcat respectively) as well as with real world weapons development (e.g. the very long Sidewinder story going back to the 1960s).

The AI will be interesting; I'm looking forward to being at the point where I can record some videos and such - still a ways off though, maybe in a couple of months or so.

I've mentioned elsewhere on the forum but one of the things I need is a mission editor so I can set up focussed scenarios for AI development. It should result in an editor the community can use too!

I definitely have plans for how the AI will work; my old dayjob used to be in military simulation (the industry, not the genre of game), and before that my postgrad academic work was mostly in AI, so I have some history with it. I'll go into details once things are further along and I have stuff to show...

When I first played WC4 I was 12 years old.

Not old enough to quite understand what was going on
I had the concept of Good vs Evil .

I never imagined I would "cross" the Confederation , they were the good guys after all !
The 12 year old me was socked back then.
I loved so much Wing Commander 4 that I became a fan .
My first expirience was not WC4 ofcourse , but WC1 on my Amiga500 but I didnt even undertand English , I was just blasting Kilrathi ,
who I thought were humans back then.
WC4 made me a fan and I loved the Movie like expirience , then I bought instantly everything WC related .

Now I replay WC games from time to time -every decade or so - and I re-expirience them a lot different .
Now the 42 year old me find WC4 a political thriller , which could easily be a good movie with great concept and good visuals , still my favorite WC game

Well although I could see the defection from the Confederation coming (I never liked how Eisen said "Yes, they have been .. taking care of me" when Blair first meets him on the Lexington, I could tell something was wrong), it is always strange.

Actually WC4 as a movie has so many tropes reminiscent of 1990s movies. In fact I found many of them collected here.

On that scene I was more like "Tolwyn makes his life hard again" .
The strange behavior on captain`s cabin , the friendly tolwyn , something was off I agree but little Mitsos` mind couldnt dream of what was coming next.

At first I denied to go with Captain Eisen. I was a little boy but I had mixed feelings about this betrayal.
When I eventually go with the Border Worlds I liked the friendly atmoshpere so much , the crew .
I felt like a Pirate with limited supplies that I was chasing confed

Is the project still alive? Seems like there has been a pretty long radio silence on the website.

(Oh, and Owen Davies's youtube channel seems to have been taken down, but luckily all of the update footage is hosted on the site itself. I used to follow his youtube channel for regular updates on the remastering of footage.)

Depends what you mean by alive - real life has really caught up with me and the rest of the team for the past year. Four day weeks are a long forgotten dream and I'm back to doing long hours. I'm hopeful I'll get back to it in a few months. This happens whenever the day job approaches release on a title, free time very much comes in waves these days.
But actually our videos were on Owens site, he took the time to re-upload the videos elsewhere when his channel was taken down.

Cheers to you guys, when the WC4 remastered team has any time to consider this project again, is there any possibility of releasing with some reliance on original assets? If you've got original terrain working in the atmospheric missions for instance, I don't think any of us would mind if that was the only option for those missions, original assets in your updated engine would still be amazing. Ofc I don't know if that would actually save time cause of all the other blockers.

But I'm thinking of what XWVM did, releasing without an updated Nebulon B model or Death Star surface, and it's still awesome.
