This is a reminder that we have another fun #Wingnut movie night planned on Discord this evening! The ongoing theme will be movies that are referenced by Wing Commander in some way. Tonight's film is The Canterbury Tales (1972) and you can find details on why we're watching it in the...

We do see it once slightly before ID4! The WC4 novel has Blair call Fox 1 when he fires a torpedo at one point. But I’m sure Independence Day was what got us all the Prophecy comms.

I was looking through an article about the promising future of Origin Systems, Inc. in the October 1991 issue of the not-at-all-confusingly-named Computer Game Review and 16-Bit Entertainment when I noticed something interesting. This thumbnail-sized photo snapped during the magazine's visit to...

You've heard of Origin FX, Origin's 1992 screensaver package that includes several Wing Commander-related modules... but the era of Windows 3.1 is long over, so it's quite possible you've never had a chance to actually use it. Well, great news: the legendary AllTinker, the mind behind W.C.A.T...

That is how it works in real life! And the Prophecy comms are certainly intended to reference that (and ID4, which had recently popularized the jargon)… but they don’t actually have that level of functionality. The comms are triggered when any missile is fired and they always say “fox one”.

The original Wing Commander shipped with almost every single feature planned in its original design documents... but Strike Commander was a different story! The original version included multiple aircraft from different ereas, ground vehicles and a much more elaborate story. This preview from...

The Wing Commander movie club has survived travelling 20,000 leagues under the sea (back and forth, not straight down). This week, we've done our second 'least popular movies' poll which is intended to occasionally force us to watch a movie no one necessarily wants to see… and the winner this...

Last month, we posted an update with screenshots of the 'tissue samples' connected by the Nephilim in Wing Commander Prophecy and we asked if anyone could identify the actual microscopy. Well, in an unlikely turn of events, someone did! Two of the images seem to originate in a period "Human...

Sadly very little! Back in 1995, Chris started preproduction on Privateer 2 with the thought that it would go into developement alongside Wing Commander IV. Preproduction is the bluesky phase where you have a couple of people working on concepts... and we don't know a lot about that beyond that...

Did someone say they wanted a small mystery? Check out this spread from an Alias Wavefront Power Animator V7 brochure: That spaceship in the middle looks kind of familiar… and according to the document's credits, it was provided by Origin Systems! This is 1995 but it isn't from Crusader or...

Last year, the Portland Retro Gaming Expo premiered the first ever display of Roberta Vaughan's FMV Zone, a carefully curated and wonderfully impressive display of artifacts that tell the story of full motion video games. At the time, we were honored to loan a Wing Commander Prophecy flight suit...

Origin founder and Ultima creator Richard Garriott, aka Lord British, went back to his roots to soft launch his new Ultima initiative this weekend: DragonCon! There he held a panel about 'what makes an Ultima' that revealed some of his plans for recovering the rights from Electronic Arts and...

Intelligent Gamer's Fusion was a short-lived gaming magazine that kicked off in 1995 and closed up shop less than a year later. Luckily, that was exactly the right time to exist for a preview of Wing Commander IV! And this one has a great interview with Chris Roberts that talks about all the...

It would be stretching to call Double Impact a classic… but it was a lot of fun, and it delivered well on its promise to have Jean-Claude Van Damme act opposite a second Jean-Claude Van Damme. And maybe that's really all you need! Happy birthday, Dundradal. We already talked about the music...

Remember Admiral Fluffy, the Kilrathi expert with a cool 3D printed Vaktoth and Dralthi? They're back with something even bigger: a Kamrani-class corvette! That's pretty much the entire Kilrathi fleet as of Wing Commander Prophecy... pretty cool! -- Original update published on...

No Man's Sky remains the Little Engine that Could of modern space sims... and since adding player-customizable ship designs it has just gotten bigger. We're always on the lookout for NMS fans trying to recreate Wing Commander ships in the game... so here's one found on Reddit! It's by...

I'll take a look! I think the raw data was extracted using Originator, but I haven't thought about that one in a bit. Will catch up. I'm sure it was originally intended to refer to the nebula, but somewhere along the way it got changed to North instead of Nebula in-continuity.
